  1. For all owners of the somewhat infamous and oft-maligned Qubie' Modem:

  3.                       A "QUICK AND DIRTY" FACTORY FIX !!!

  6. I have been a beleagured and frustrated owner of the Qubie'internal modem 
  7. since January 1984.   Virtually from the first day that I put my first QB 
  8. modem (Iam now working with a replacement) on this BBS  I have experienced 
  9. the abominable level of bit error rates during file transfers that have 
  10. been most adequately described in this message system by other users.  It 
  11. must be noted, however, that I have encountered such difficulties on only 
  12. three bulletin boards out of the 5060 that I have worked across the 
  13. country:

  15.           1.   Plantz PC BBS ... (8824227 and 8824228)
  16.           2.   Bridgeport RCPM ... 3264392
  17.           3.   Lain's Bolingbrook PC BBS ... 9720628

  19. In all other cases, both my original QB modem and its replacement performed 
  20. flawlessly at 1200 baud with bit error rates approximating almost precisely 
  21. those stated for the Hayes 1200 series units.  This fact, of course, 
  22. implied to me that there was nothing really wrong with the QB modem.  That 
  23. my problem, and those experienced by others, were entirely traceable to 
  24. conditions on the host side of the communications line.  Consequently, I 
  25. have for months tolerated degraded transfer rates and a few disconcerting 
  26. system "hangups" while online with the above cited bulletin board systems.

  28. A few days I happened to call the Qubie' people about another matter, 
  29. mentioning my continuing hassle with three of my favorite boards.  
  30. Immediately, the QB rep recommended a fix for my problem:

  32.      A.   Remove the Qubie' modem board and locate potentiometer R 32 
  33.           just beneath the speaker.  This pot adjusts the incoming carrier
  34.           signal level.
  35.  
  36.      B.   With small jeweler's screwdriver,  adjust this pot ... first in 
  37.           in halfturns and subsequently, in quarterturns ... clockwise to 
  38.           increase or counterclockwise to reduce the carrier.   
  39.  
  40.      C.   Replace the modem board and dial up the problem BBS and check for   
  41.           "glitches" or number of receive errors during XMODEM transfer of 
  42.           a file of about 100 blocks or so in size.  Repeat adjustment 
  43.           procedure until error rate is reduced to an acceptable level.
